Dry needling

Treatment for musculoskeletal pain and movement impairments

Our Services

Dry Needling

Dry needling is a technique our sports chiropractors use to treat musculoskeletal pain and movement impairments.

It involves the insertion of thin, solid needles into trigger points or tight bands of muscles, tendons, or connective tissues.

The term “dry” needling is used to distinguish it from “wet” needling, which involves injecting substances such as saline or local anesthetics into the targeted areas. Dry needling primarily relies on the mechanical stimulation provided by the needle itself.

How Does Dry Needling Work

Trigger Point Deactivation

Dry needling often targets trigger points, which are hyperirritable spots in muscles associated with tight bands. The insertion of a needle into these points can help release tension and deactivate the trigger points, reducing pain.

Neuromuscular Modulation

The insertion of needles into muscles can stimulate the nervous system. This stimulation may lead to a cascade of effects, including the release of neurotransmitters and changes in neural signaling, ultimately modulating pain signals.

Release of Endorphins

The mechanical stimulation of tissues during dry needling may trigger the release of endorphins, which are the body’s natural painkillers. This can contribute to a sense of well-being and pain relief.

Neurotransmitter Changes

The needling process may influence the release and balance of various neurotransmitters involved in pain modulation, such as serotonin and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA).
